Aug. 2 - Lisa's Musings (on eye rolling) and Every Day Life
I got a press release today that says a woman was THROWN OUT of an Elmhurst, Ill., City Council meeting for rolling her eyes in response to something that a city council member said.
OMG. I can't count the number of times that I've rolled my eyes at not only what a city council, township or village trustee has said but also at what a resident (or 40) has said at a meeting.
I'd be in REAL trouble there.
According to this press release -- which was really about body language from a Small Business and Communication Success Strategist -- the city council is looking into whether eye rolling can be construed as breaking the state's disorderly conduct law.
Apparently, Illinois state law defines disorderly conduct as "an act in such unreasonable manner as to alarm or disturb another, or to provoke a breach of the peace."
Drawing a gun, yeah.
Yelling and screaming, sure.
But eye rolling?
If they decide to outlaw this behavior at city council meetings, I'm sure this will make some lawyer a really fun case.
And maybe. like the Arizona immigration law, perhaps the Ann Arbor City Council will consider adopting a resolution in support of having anyone in the room removed for eye rolling.
I'd be glad to serve as the test case; I'd get home from their meetings a lot earlier that way.
