March 6 - Lisa's Musings From Every Day Life
There was a LOT of mooing going on at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds this morning.
And, hopefully, I will get the editing end of this brave new world of video figured out soon -- so you can see some of these very articulate 4-Hers talking about their steers and heifers.
Today was cattle weigh-in day for 4-Hers, who plan to show their steers and heifers at the youth show July 25-30.
Now, as you know, cows are my favorite farm animal, but what I didn't realize was all the work that goes into "taming" these LARGE creatures so the 4-Hers can walk them around the arena and show them.
Some of them showed that 800-1,000 pounds carries a lot of weight when a steer wants to go one way and the person guiding it doesn't. Or, if that steer doesn't want to step up into the weigh station.
Although most of them were willing to go on this new adventure; others not so much.
First they were weighed and then their ears were tagged for identification.
And some of the 4-Hers said they had a lot of work to do to train their steers before they show. But I've seen them show their animals, and by this summer, I know this will be true.
Being that close to these beautiful creatures was a great way to spend a Saturday morning and I think I shot some good video so you can see for yourself this week.
And hopefully, it contains some of that sweet mooing that was going on this morning.
